I started sailing at 5 years old with my father crewing
in boats such as the GP14 and Enterprise. I moved on to Mirrors with my brother Clive before stepping into the Laser at 14.
My father Andrew Cokayne spent every weekend taking us to Laser qualifiers and training events around the country as taxi
driver. Now unable to sail himself he decided to get involved again and spent time training and acting as an on the water
Judge at Laser events. After a couple of years this became more than a weekend hobby and he became an International Judge,
judging many different classes.
I followed the youth program in the Laser and the 420 and
was lucky enough to become a member of the Laser National Youth Squad coached by Jim Saltonstall MBE. I spent a number of
years competing on the Laser circuit before developing my skills across a wide variety of dinghy classes and keelboats including
the Etchell and X one design. My results include top 3 placings at championships in both dinghy’s and keelboats including
winning the inaugural Captain’s Cup in the XOD fleet at Cowes Week in 2002 and 2007.
